Project Explaination

The STEM Under 7 project introduces children below 7 years into Coding. It has 4 sections:

  • Mathematics
  • Computer Science
  • Science
  • Storytelling

To start the application, the child begins by having the parent enter their details or biodata, after which the young virtual teacher introduces themselves. The child is then asked to introduce themselves and their name is captured. This name is mentioned at various stages as the child navigates through the  educational game.

The child is prompted to choose one of the learning areas. Choice of learning areas is by navigating using the arrow keys to the desired subject then pressing the spacebar.

When the child uses arrow keys to choose Mathematics, it leads to a menu for counting game and sequencing. When the child chooses the counting game, the virtual teacher teaches the child how to count and prompts the child to repeat what she has said. After the child has repeated from digits 0 to 9, it then leads the child to a step where they are shown a number and they are supposed to say what the number is. The number appears on the screen and the child should identify and say it.

Once done with the above, the child moves onto Computer science still using the arrow keys. Under this section, there is Algorithms and Direction. The child is then instructed on how to choose Algorithms and Directions. Both choices lead to the same game. The Algorithm game involves the child using their arrow keys to move a beetle from one shape to another while following yellow arrows on the screen.

Once done with the Algorithm and Direction game (which are one and the same thing), the child then moves onto Science. This code for Science is still work in progress as timelines would not allow it’s coding.

After the Science section, the child may choose Listen to Stories. This section is also work in progress.

This project is aimed at invoking the child’s creativity at their earliest stages. Once the child is able to complete the course with at least 70% Score, he or she is ready to start using Pictoblox or Scratch.
